As the new year begins I find myself reflecting on 2016 and looking forward to what 2017 will bring. This time of year I am often working with clients who have set resolutions for themselves to either eat better, shed a few pounds, or consider ways to improve their overall health and wellness.
Losing weight seems to be a common goal, and I find many clients returning to the struggle to lose weight and keep it off. A typical scenario often includes an emphasis on the numbers as a measurement of success, such as losing 15 pounds or cutting back to 1800 calories each day. However, these goals set clients up for focusing on the numbers, rather than their overall health, which often backfires as the process, or journey, takes a backseat.
Enjoying the journey and focusing in the process, rather than the numbers, has been an empowering pursuit I am excited to coach my clients through. Just this week a client shared how they were experimenting with using different senses to enjoy a snack or meal. They chuckled when discussing how their sense of sound was a sense they had never thought to use, but was inspiring them to consider a wider variety of textures to see what they sounded like!
I have placed a mantra on the entryway of my home office as a reminder that “Life is a journey, not a destination.” Where will you go on your journey and are you embracing the process as you embark?
